On June the 14th, 2006, The Baton Rouge Restaurant in Montreal was the site for the media launch of a program - to promote, support and increase volunteerism in Canada – that many charity groups want adopted by federal, provincial and municipal governments. A coalition of concerned citizens gathered together to celebrate this initiative including: Sid Stevens from “Sun Youth”, Adrian and Natalie Bercovici from “Generations Foundation”, Brian Roscoe from “Dreams Take Flight”, Melpa Kamateros from “The Shield of Athena”, as well as Dr. S. Dwivedi from the “Freedom from Poverty Foundation”. The event was sponsored by Montreal business woman and philanthropist Chris Ann Nakis.
Over the years, we have continued to send this to various government officials with hopes that this initiative would be considered, studied and ultimately: implemented. It’s interesting to note that the recognition and promotion of volunteer work, the very thing we have been pushing for the past three years - is one of the main thrusts of US President Obama’s new government – so our venture could not be more timely.
